About the observatory

Built for work that deserves to be seen

Display Archive is a place to keep, curate and present creative work — a digital observatory where each project is a star and your portfolio is the system that holds them together.

Most portfolios are built twice: once as the work, and again as a website that tries to explain it. The second one is usually a template that flattens everything into the same grid of thumbnails, whatever the work is.

We started from the opposite end. An archive first — every project recorded properly, with its context, its process and its condition — and then a display layer that lets that archive be explored the way you would walk a good exhibition: at your own pace, in any order, with room to look closely.

The name is literal. Display is the half people see. Archive is the half that lasts.

Four principles, kept in writing.

  1. 01

    Your work stays yours

Everything you upload stays yours. It is not sold, not used to train anything, not shown anywhere you did not publish it — and it leaves with you when you delete your account.

  2. 02

    Honest by default

Unfinished work is allowed and labelled as such. A portfolio that only shows the successes tells a reader nothing about how someone actually works.

  3. 03

    The work comes first

No ads, no feed ranking, no badges competing with the pictures. The interface is a dark room built so the pieces are the brightest thing in it.

  4. 04

    Fast for everyone

Every public page is rendered on the server, so it reads without JavaScript and on a slow connection. The 3D is the welcome, never the price of entry.

Where it came from.

Before it was a platform, Display Archive was one person’s register of every website they had built — including the ones that never shipped. That register still exists, numbered and dated, and it is the founding collection the platform grew out of.

It is also held to a published standard: a set of mechanically-checked rules every page has to pass before it goes live. The same checks run against this page.

Your work deserves a bigger stage.
